10 fast and easy steps to improve your guitar improvisation skillsTip No. 1 – Try to keep it simple!Golden rule number one! If you just started improvising on guitar, try to keep it simple. The less notes you produce at the beginning with more thoughts in your mind the more and faster you will learnhow to improvise.
Tip No. 2 – Always think about melodyMelody is a key to good improvisation skills. Of course you can shred as much as you can, but every great improvisation is built upon strong basis of nice piece of music that can be later on surrounded by more complicated piece of your playing skills.
Tip No. 3 – Try to use just one string or two at the startThis can sound a little bit strange but try it! Improvise just on one string, going only upwards and down. Think about single next note, should you have move just semi-tone or full tone to get the right melody and to fit toyour background music?
Tip No. 4 – Use pentatonic scales!Pentatonic scales arefoundation of any improvisation skills and are able to provide you with basic orientation on fretboard. Get Familiar with them, they are easy and quite useful!
Tip No. 5 – Think aheadThink about your next move, really do this. There is no need to move fast, it is also definitely ok if you play again several melody you just playedto obtain some time to think about where to go next.
Tip No. 6 – Does your improvisation fit to the gender of the music of your backing track?This is very important thing. I heardso many musicians shredding like metal heros and improvising in this style to quite slow romantic piece of music or backing track. This just doesn’t work. Be musician, not only guitar player. Think about gender of music you play and what role the guitar is taking there.
Tip No. 7 – Developuniversal scales progressionTry to inventyour own universal and unique progressions and scale progression! I mean, try to develop progression that are not dependent on using open notes so that you are easily able to transpose them and use in any other scales.
